A customer waiting on a vehicle part may already have a car off the road. Most of the work that prevents the wrong part shipping happens before anyone picks.
The catalogue is a matrix, not a list
Tens of thousands of part numbers, OE and aftermarket cross-references, superseded numbers, and fitment tied to make, model, year and engine variant. Two visually identical parts with different references are two different products and the carton often does not say which.
Weight and size span the whole warehouse
One catalogue can span clips and sensors through to exhaust or body parts. Storage and handling are therefore scoped from actual dimensions and weights; any heavy-racking limit is confirmed before stock is accepted.
The clock is a repair, not a delivery date
Same-day dispatch on urgent repair orders is not a service-level nicety here. A workshop with a bay occupied is losing money per hour, and a missed cut-off is a rebooked job.
Some of it comes back and is worth money
Cores, warranty claims and fitment errors return at high rates and are three different flows with three different outcomes. Treating them as one returns queue destroys the value in all three.

Ship on an eligible service
Carrier selection follows destination, size, weight and product eligibility. Specialist heavy or restricted-part lanes are added to the operating plan after route acceptance.
Separate ordinary returns from core programmes
Fitment errors and warranty returns follow the agreed returns rule. Core-exchange programmes use their own identification, credit and consolidation workflow when included in the account scope.

A core is not an ordinary return.
The old alternator, caliper or turbo can have value as a remanufacturing input, but only if the programme knows what came back and what should happen to it.

What makes an automotive catalogue different from a large catalogue
Every 3PL says it handles high SKU counts. An automotive parts fulfilment system has a specific difficulty: the identity of the item is carried in a reference number that is often not printed anywhere a picker can read it, and adjacent numbers describe parts that look identical and do not fit.

No. We verify against the reference data you supply and guarantee that the number on the shelf is the number in the order. Whether a given reference fits a particular model year is catalogue work and sits with your data team or catalogue provider.
Core-exchange uses a separate operating workflow: the return is matched to the surcharge, graded to the agreed standard and consolidated for the remanufacturer. That workflow is added where the account needs it.
Airbags, pre-tensioners, batteries, oils, paints and aerosols are restricted lines. Send the classification and documentation first; the site, storage and carrier route are checked before the SKU is accepted.

The workable pattern is one stock position feeding several channels: a single inventory in the WMS, exposed to the dealer portal, the marketplaces and the webshop through channel-level allocation rather than through separate stock pools. That way a dealer order and a consumer order draw from the same shelf and the availability shown is real in every channel.
That depends on who is holding the stock rather than who is selling it. Orders shipped from inventory already inside Germany or a neighbouring EU hub arrive next day on most lanes; orders drop-shipped from outside the EU carry a customs entry and several days. If you are a brand rather than a buyer, holding stock in an EU warehouse is what makes the fast option available.
