A factory seal opened during check-in can void a warranty condition. Packaging integrity is verified without breaking it, and anything already compromised is flagged rather than shelved.

Grading is a judgement, and judgement varies.
A returned lens is graded against your written standard by a trained warehouse operator, not by an optical technician. That is enough to separate as-new from open-box from damaged, and it is not enough to certify optical performance.
Where a unit's condition is genuinely in question, it is held rather than graded optimistically. A held unit costs you a few days; a wrongly-restocked one costs you the second return and the review.
